Intro to Bharatanatyam

We’re so excited to announce this beginner Indian classical dance series, developed in collaboration with Philly Dheem, a local group that celebrates South Asian classical art in all forms. Join Dheem dancers Rishika Bandamede and Rochitha Nathan to learn traditional hand gestures (hasta mudras) and foot movements, then put them together into adavus, repeated practice of foundational technique such as striking steps (Thattadavu) and rhythmic stretches. Time permitting, you may also work on connecting mudras with abhinaya (facial expressions) to create the elegant, expressive storytelling featured in Bharatanatyam. While learning the building blocks of Bharatanatyam, you’ll also piece together a short combination over the course of the series. Those who wish to perform that routine will have the opportunity to present it at the Philadelphia Dance Day showcase on July 25.

Bharatanatyam training often begins at a young age and committed dancers spend years working under experienced gurus. This series is designed to give an introduction to this beautiful art form to those who may not have had the chance to study it as a child, or who come from other cultural backgrounds.

  • Sundays from 1-2:30 pm with Rishika & Rochitha; six week series from June 7 – July 19 (skipping July 4th weekend)
  • $160 for the full series. Philly Dance Fitness members get 20% off!

Pssst: If you want  to see what Bharatanatyam is all about before committing to the series, join Rishika and Rochitha for a pop-up class on Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30 pm! Only $16 drop-in (members get an automatic discount). Register here.
