Perform at Philadelphia Dance Day!

Itching to perform? Come heat up the stage this summer at the Philadelphia Dance Day showcase on Saturday, July 28!

This amazing nonprofit community festival brought nearly 600 people out to dance last year. After more than 25 free daytime dance workshops, the event culminates with an evening showcase featuring the most wonderfully eclectic mix of routines performed by local instructors, semi-professional dancers and student groups.

Philly Dance Fitness is the primary organizer of this volunteer-run event, and it’s the highlight of our summer every year! We get to boogie all day long with other dance groups in the city, then show off some of our talented students at the evening show. This year, our instructors will be putting together student routines in tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet and pointe. Whether you’re a beginner or a longtime dancer, we’ve got a place for you to shine on stage, so don’t be afraid to join in! Read on to learn how to sign up:

Ballet Performance Series (Beginner/Intermediate)

  • Instructor: Beverly Holskin has crafted choreography to highlight dancers of a wide range of abilities
  • Experience: Open to beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate levels; some basic background in ballet required.
  • Rehearsals:
    • Dates: 5 Thursdays: June 28, July 5, 12, 19 and 26
    • Time: 8:15 p.m. – 9 p.m
    • Location: Rittenhouse studio (1624 South St.) 
  • Cost: $55. Register here.

Bollywood Performance Series

  • Instructor: Learn an upbeat, intricate Bollywood performance routine with instructor Antima Chakraborty during our Bollywood Tech small group class starting the last week of June.
  • Experience: No Bollywood dance experience required, however, some background in learning progressive choreography is highly recommended as this will be a fast-paced, complex piece.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 4 Wednesdays: June 27, July 11, 18 and 25.
      • Note: No class on Independence Day, July 4.
    • Time: 8:30 p.m. – 9:15 p.m.
    • Studio: Midtown studio (1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor)
  • Cost: $13 per session, or lock-in a discounted rate by purchasing a 4-session pass.
  • **Those who do not wish to perform are still welcome to attend class — they will simply focus on learning steps and not blocking.

Jazz Performance Series

  • Instructor: Sashay your heart out on stage with a routine led by Lee-Ann Doncevic.
  • Experience: Open to all dancers, no prior jazz experience required.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 4 Thursdays: July 5, 12, 19 and 26
    • Time: 6:30 p.m. – 7:20 p.m.
    • Studio: Midtown studio (1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor)
  • Cost: $45. Register here.
  • **Note: This temporarily takes the place of our Tap Tonic class, which will return in this same time slot in August.**

Pointe Performance Series

  • Instructor: Prove your “pointe” on stage with the help of Beverly Holskin, who will begin working on Dance Day routines during our Monday and Friday night pointe sessions starting the last week of June.
  • Experience: Some pointe experience required.
  • Rehearsals:
    • BEGINNER POINTE
    • Dates: 5 Fridays (June 29, July 6, 13, 20 and 27)
    • Time: 7:45 p.m.
    • Studio: Midtown studio (1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor)
    • ADVANCED BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE POINTE
    • Dates: 5 Mondays (June 25, July 2, 9, 16 and 23)
    • Time: 8:30 p.m.
    • Studio: Rittenhouse studio. (1624 South St.)
  • Cost: $13 per session, or lock in a discounted rate by purchasing a 4-session pass.
  • ** Those who cannot or do not wish to perform are still encouraged to attend class — they will simply focus on learning steps and not blocking.

Tap Performance Series

  • Instructor: Show off your skills in this all-levels routine led by Sherrilyn Billger.
  • Experience: All levels.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: Tuesdays: July 3, 10, 17, 24 
    • Time: 8:15 p.m. – 9 p.m.
    • Studio: Midtown studio (1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor)
  • Cost: $45. Register here.

Performance Mini-Series

Contemporary, JazzTech and Hip-Hop routines will be taught in part during regular ongoing group classes. These classes will remain open to anyone — those who do not wish to perform are still encouraged to come and will simply learn pieces of the combination for fun. Those who plan to perform at Dance Day must also sign up for a 3-week “mini series” to review the moves, work on stage presence and finalize blocking. The mini series will be held before or after class in the weeks leading up to Dance Day.

Contemporary Performance Mini-Series

  • Instructor: Let your lyrical side shine in choreography directed by Kayla Babicki.
  • Experience: All levels.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 3 Wednesdays: July 11, 18 and 25.
    • Time: Performers should attend the 6 p.m. Contemporary Fitness class as well as half hour blocking sessions directly afterward from 7 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.,
    • Studio: Rittenhouse studio (1624 South St).
  • Cost: Class is $13 drop-in, one punch on a class card or FREE for members. The mini-series is $20; register here.

Hip-Hop Performance Mini-Series

  • Instructor: Unleash your inner swag in this routine taught by Ricky Evans. 
  • Experience: All levels.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 3 Saturdays: July 7, 14 and 21.
    • Time: Performers should attend the 1:30 p.m. class as well as half hour blocking sessions directly afterward from 2:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.
    • Studio: at at our Rittenhouse studio (1624 South St).
  • Cost: Class is $13 drop-in, one punch on a class card or FREE for members. The mini-series is $20; register here.

Jazz Tech Performance Mini-Series

  • Instructor: Show off your jazzy style in choreography led by Beverly Holskin.
  • Experience: All levels.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 3 Tuesdays: July 10, 17 and 24.
    • Time: Performers should attend the 6 p.m. JazzTech class as well as half-hour blocking sessions directly beforehand from 5:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.
    • Studio: Rittenhouse studio (1624 South St).
  • Cost: Class is $13 drop-in, one punch on a class card or FREE for members. The mini-series is $20; register here.

All of these finished pieces will be performed for hundreds of audience members attending the Dance Day evening showcase at 8:30 p.m. on July 28 at the Gershman Y in Center City (401 S. Broad St.)

Keep in mind that rehearsal absences can greatly impact blocking for the rest of the group, so please make sure you can commit to the entire rehearsal schedule as well as the performance date when signing up. Space is also limited, so we strongly suggest registering by the end of June — if not sooner — to secure your spot!
