Perform at Dance Day!

Itching to perform? Come heat up the stage this summer at the Philadelphia Dance Day showcase on Saturday, July 27!

This amazing nonprofit community festival brought more than 500 people out to dance last year. After more than 25 free daytime dance workshops, the event culminates with an evening showcase featuring the most wonderfully eclectic mix of routines performed by local instructors, semi-professional dancers and student groups.

Philly Dance Fitness is the primary organizer of this volunteer-run event, and it’s the highlight of our summer every year! We get to boogie all day long with other dance groups in the city, then show off some of our talented students at the evening show. This year, our instructors will be putting together student routines in jazz, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary, belly dance, Bollywood and pointe. Whether you’re a beginner or a longtime dancer, we’ve got a place for you to shine on stage, so don’t be afraid to join in! Read on to learn how to sign up:

Ballet Performance Series

  • Instructor: Beverly Holskin has crafted choreography to highlight dancers of a wide range of abilities. Rehearsals for a mixed Beginner/Intermediate routine begin in mid-June; staging for an Advanced piece starts the following week.
  • Experience: Some background in ballet required, please contact us if you’re not sure which section is right for your level.
  • Beginner/Intermediate Ballet
    • Rehearsal Dates: 5 Thursdays – June 20, 27, July 11, 18 and 25. (No class on Independence Day, July 4.)
    • Time: 8:15 p.m. – 9 p.m.
    • Location: Rittenhouse (1624 South St.)
      **This takes the place of our ongoing Beginner Pointe, which resumes as usual after Dance Day.
    • Cost: $60. Register here.
  • Advanced Ballet
    • Rehearsal Dates: 3 Saturdays – June 29, July 13 and 20 (Note: No class on July 6 due to the holiday week.)
    • Time: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
    • Location: Rittenhouse (1624 South St.)
    • Cost: $40. Register here.

Belly Dance Performance Series

  • Instructor: Shake everything you got in this uplifting Egyptian style belly dance piece led by Roberto Mejia.
  • Experience: No prior belly dance experience required.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 3 Saturdays: July 6, 13 and 20
    • Time: 11 a.m. – 11:50 a.m.
    • Location: South Philly studio (1170 S. Broad St)
    • *This takes the place of our ongoing Belly Dance class, which resumes as usual after Dance Day.

Bollywood Performance Series

  • Instructor: Learn an intricate, high-energy performance routine with instructor Antima Chakraborty assisted by Rachel DeRita and Richa Aggarwal.
  • Experience: No Bollywood dance experience required, however, some background in learning progressive choreography is highly recommended as this will be a fast-paced, complex piece.
  • Rehearsals:
    • Dates: 4 Wednesdays: June 26, July 10, 17 and 24. (No rehearsal on July 3 due to the holiday week)
    • Time: 8:30 p.m. – 9:20 p.m.
    • Location: Midtown studio (1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor)
    • *This takes the place of our ongoing BollywoodTech class, which resumes as usual after Dance Day.
  • Cost: $50. Register here.

Contemporary Performance Series

  • Instructor: Let your lyrical side shine in choreography directed by Kayla Babicki.
  • Experience: All levels.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 4 Wednesdays: June 26, July 10, 17 and 24. (No rehearsal on July 3 due to the holiday week)
    • Time: 7:30 p.m. – 8:20 p.m.
    • Studio: Midtown (1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor)
    • Cost: $50. Register here.

Pointe Performance Series

  • Instructor: Prove your “pointe” on stage with the help of Beverly Holskin, who will begin working on Dance Day routines during our Monday and Friday night pointe sessions starting the last week of June.
  • Experience: Some pointe experience required.
  • BEGINNER POINTE
    • Rehearsal Dates: 5 Fridays (June 28, July 5, 12, 19 and 26)
    • Time: 7:45 p.m.
    • Studio: Midtown (1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor)
  • ADVANCED BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE POINTE
    • Rehearsal Dates: 5 Mondays (June 24, July 1, 8, 15, 22)
    • Time: 8:30 p.m.
    • Studio: Rittenhouse (1624 South St.)
  • Cost: $13 per session, or lock in a discounted rate by purchasing a 4-session pass.
  • *Those who cannot or do not wish to perform are still encouraged to attend class — they will simply focus on learning steps and not blocking.

Performance Mini-Series

JazzTech, Hip-Hop and Diva Pop Jazz routines will be taught in part during regular ongoing group classes. These classes will remain open to anyone — those who do not wish to perform are still encouraged to come and will simply learn pieces of the combination for fun. Those who plan to perform at Dance Day must also sign up for a 3-week “mini series” to review the moves, work on stage presence and finalize blocking. The mini series will be held before or after class in the weeks leading up to Dance Day.

Diva Pop Jazz Performance Mini-Series

  • Instructor: Bring some sass and sashays to this stage in this jazz/pop fusion routine directed by Jody Thigpen.
  • Experience: All levels.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 3 Wednesdays: July 10, 17 and 24.
    • Time: Performers should attend the 8 p.m. class as well as half hour blocking sessions directly afterward from 9 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
    • Studio: Rittenhouse (1624 South St).
    • Cost: Class is $13 drop-in, use a class card or FREE for members. The mini-series is $25; register here.

Hip-Hop Performance Mini-Series

  • Instructor: Unleash your inner swag in this routine taught by Ricky Evans. 
  • Experience: All levels.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 3 Tuesdays: July 9, 16 and 23.
    • Time: Performers should attend the 8 p.m. class as well as half hour blocking sessions directly afterward from 9 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
    • Studio: Rittenhouse (1624 South St).
  • Cost: Class is $13 drop-in, one “punch” from a class card or FREE for members. The mini-series is $25; register here.

Jazz Tech Performance Mini-Series

  • Instructor: Show off your jazzy style in a routine led by Beverly Holskin.
  • Experience: All levels.
  • Rehearsals: 
    • Dates: 3 Tuesdays: July 9, 16 and 23.
    • Time: Performers should attend the 6 p.m. JazzTech class as well as half-hour blocking sessions directly beforehand from 5:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.
    • Studio: Rittenhouse (1624 South St).
  • Cost: Class is $13 drop-in, use a class card or FREE for members. The mini-series is $25; register here.

All of these finished pieces will be performed for hundreds of audience members attending the Dance Day evening showcase at 8:30 p.m. on July 27 at Plays & Players Theater in Center City (1714 Delancey Place).

Keep in mind that rehearsal absences can greatly impact blocking for the rest of the group, so please make sure you can commit to the entire rehearsal schedule as well as the performance date when signing up.
