May Additions: Jazz, African & More

Happy Spring!! We’ve got some exciting schedule updates this month, including new Jazz Fusion, African Caribbean and Cardio Pop classes, the return of Tap Tonic and Friday Zumba, another duo of sexy Frisky Friday workshops plus a couple of time changes. Read on for all the details plus a sneak preview of some upcoming performance opportunities.

Schedule Additions

African Caribbean
Get ready for kicks, jumps, spins and high energy torso movements as you explore the dance styles of Africa and the Caribbean in this all-levels workout.

  • Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. with Lael
  • Midtown, 1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor
  • Medium/High impact | Beginner friendly
  • *This takes the place of Power Stretch, which is unfortunately on hiatus while the instructor is out on medical leave.

Barre Fit
Build strength, stamina and flexibility while tightening up your core and lower body in our barre fitness program. Since we moved our Thursday section to experiment with a Jazz class, we thought we’d add another barre option on Wednesdays.

  • Wednesdays at 6 p.m. with Kayla, starting May 15
  • Rittenhouse, 1624 South St.
  • Low Impact/Medium Intensity | Beginner friendly
  • *Due to studio logistics, the Contemporary class previously held during this time will move to 7:30 p.m. at our Midtown location, same night.

Cardio Pop
We know how much y’all love to sweat so we figured you might like another chance to amp up your heart rate as you dance along to all sorts of awesome pop songs. Expect a mix of high and medium intensity choreography, with a bit of strengthening and sculpting tossed in.

  • Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. with RaGina
  • Midtown, 1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor
  • Medium-High impact | Beginner friendly

Jazz Fusion
Since we had so much interest in jazz at our early spring “Take It OfF Broadway” show, we’re adding another chance to get jazzy every week! Warm up with “follow-the-leader” routines and passes across the floor, then dive into a progressive choreography infused with jazz and lyrical movements, and perhaps even a few elements of pop, ballet or musical theater depending on the flavor of the music.  

  • Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. with Lee-Ann
  • Midtown, 1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor
  • Medium impact | Beginner friendly

Tap Tonic
Dust off your tap shoes because our tap fitness program is back! Stomp, shuffle and spin into shape in this fast-paced, cardio focused tap class that’s sure to work those legs.

  • Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. with Lee-Ann
  • Midtown, 1301 Locust St. 2nd Floor
  • Low-medium impact | Best for advanced beginner/intermediate but adaptable for all levels

Zumba
By request, we’re bringing back our Friday “happy hour” Zumba so you can kick off your weekend with some international sabor. Absolutely no dance experience required, just “feel the music” and follow along!

  • Fridays at 6 p.m. with Lehla or Sydney
  • Rittenhouse, 1624 South St.
  • Medium/high impact | Beginner friendly

Time Changes

Please note that a few ongoing programs will shift times a bit:

  • Sunday Beginner I Ballet and BalletEXTREME start an hour earlier, at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively
  • Saturday Belly Dance will move to an earlier time – 11 a.m. now in the South Philly location (1170 S. Broad St) starting May 11.
  • BollyX moves to Sundays at 10 a.m. at our Rittenhouse location (1624 South St) starting May 12.
  • As noted above, Contemporary will remain on Wednesdays but move to 7:30 p.m. at our Midtown location (1301 Locust St).

Later this month, be sure to keep an eye on our online schedule for a few reductions over Memorial Day weekend.

Workshops

Frisky Friday: Striptease Dance Parties
Build confidence and tone your entire body at these mini workshops featuring smokin’ hot dance routines, complimentary wine and refreshments! This month, we’re featuring our best ass-ets with a booty-pop theme, then hitting the floor.Frisky Fridays sometime sell out, so we highly recommend pre-registering to secure your spot.

  • May 10, 2019
    • Booty Pop: Drop, swirl, twerk and grind in this booty-themed party. You’ll be working that butt in all sorts of angles as you dance through several follow-the-leader routines and then learn a longer choreography. And yes, we will include J-Lo’s “Booty.” Because of course.
  • May 31, 2019
    • Floored: Work your body down to the floor and then down some more in this salacious exploration of striptease floorwork including hip grinds, doggie-style twerking and everything between. In addition to breaking down tricks, you’ll also learn a complete routine so you can put what you’ve learned into action.
  • Both at 8:30 p.m. in Midtown (1301 Locust St, 2nd Floor)
  • $18 tickets include wine and refreshments; Members get 20% off!

Performance Series Sneak Peek

If you’re itching for more chances to take the stage, we’ve got you covered a little later this summer. Starting in late June, several of our instructors will begin putting together routines for the Philadelphia Dance Day showcase on Saturday, July 27. Links to participate in tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet and pointe pieces will be posted next month.
