January 2014 Schedule

Happy New Year!!! We’ve been hard at work on some exciting additions for January. Read on for what’s new in the new year!

Brand New Classes and Instructors

Bhangra Blast
Take a traditional North Indian folk dance, add some modern hip-hop moves, a little Bollywood flavor and relentlessly high-octane music. The result: one seriously fun, off-the-chain cardio workout. Trust us — it’s hard not to smile when you’re bouncing around. 

Aside from an extreme aerobic workout, we’ll make sure you leave with all the basics you need to fit right in at your next Indian wedding or holiday. So, if Indian music makes you want to move or you’ve daydreamed of dancing in a huge Bollywood number, now’s your chance!

  • Tuesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 8:20 p.m. **Starting Jan. 14

Tap Tonic
Stomp, shuffle and spin into shape with this ridiculously fun tap workout. Whether you tap danced as a kid or never set foot in a tap shoe, if you want to tap, this class is for you. You don’t even need tap shoes, though we can’t promise you won’t buy a pair once you get hooked.

Instructor Pam Hetherington has been tap dancing professionally since she was a teenager and teaches at several studios throughout the Delaware Valley. But don’t be intimidated by her resume — in this class, she’s more concerned with how much you’re sweating and smiling than whether you nail every sound of every rhythm. The steps will be easy for beginners to pick up, yet fast enough to challenge even those with tap experience.

More of Your Favorite Classes

Barre classes are all the rage lately, and if you’ve felt the burn after taking BalletEXTREME, you know why. So we’re now giving you two options each week to take advantage of this invigorating combination of ballet and body conditioning designed to build strength, flexibility and grace. Absolutely no prior ballet experience required. Fitness is the goal, ballet movements are the vehicle. In addition to a new Sunday morning section, please note that the Wednesday evening class will now be held an hour earlier at 7 p.m.

  • Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. **starting Jan. 12, 2014*
  • Wednesdays from 7 to 7:50 p.m., both sections with Beverly
  • Major Moment Studio, 1624 South St.
  • Wear socks or ballet slippers

Pilates is back! So if you’re looking for flat abs, a perfect booty and “high-definition” muscles, join us on Sundays for a low-impact complement to your cardio regiment. Note that low-impact doesn’t mean you won’t be working hard. Expect a mix of classic Pilates floor exercises with sculpting and a dash of cardio thrown in. See for yourself how this total body workout can push your muscles to the max to develop more than just a “powerhouse” core.

Power Jam Stretch
Get your stretch in twice a week. We’re adding back the Tuesday night section at an earlier time. Join Emily at 6 p.m. in our South Philly location to elongate and strengthen your entire body with this challenging combination of yoga, dance, strength training and Pilates. We promise you’ll work up a sweat as you move through sequences designed to build power, flexibility and balance.

  • Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. with Kathy
  • Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. with Emily (front studio)
  • The Arts Parlor, 1170 S. Broad St.
  • Bring a mat or use one at the studio.

We’ve had a number of requests for daytime Zumba, so we’re testing the waters to see if there’s enough interest to sustain a 9 a.m. section. So if you don’t work a typical day shift, join Deborah for a high-energy fusion of international rhythms with easy to follow moves. No pattern memorization or dance experience required. Nobody’s judging if you take a wrong step – just follow the leader and prepare to sweat!

Other Notes

NEST Changes
We’re still continuing Cardio Pop, Zumba and Dance Party Boot Camp at NEST, but instructors will be shifting a bit. Veronica will now be teaching the Wednesday night Zumba class. Timaree will begin a new college teaching gig in the middle of the month, so Deb and others will cover Thursday Dance Party Boot Camp for the second half of the month. The Thursday schedule will likely change up a bit in February due to Timaree’s departure. And don’t despair, you can still workout with Timaree on Frisky Friday and Sunday DPBC and Pilates.

House Party Fit
We’ve had so much fun with this new hip-hop program since last fall that we’re continuing both Monday and Wednesday sections at the Performance Garage in January. However, the Thursday Zumba class will not return to the schedule at this time. You can still Zumba with Veronica on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Midtown.

Note that this class moves up an hour to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays at Major Moment, followed by BalletEXTREME and the new Tap Tonic class.
