Breakin’ Into May

Breakin’ Into May

We’re breakin’ into spring — literally! We’ve been itching to try a breakdance fitness class for years, so we’re beyond psyched to announce a debut Intro to Breakdancing series this May. On top of this experimental specialty program, we’ve got a few other additions to the more than 40 classes on our weekly schedule, plus bi-monthly Frisky Friday striptease parties, another Beginner Pointe Intensive and a super charged Mixtape Mashup workshop. Read on for all the details plus a sneak preview of some upcoming performance opportunities.

Specialty Series

Intro to Breakin’
If you’ve always admired B-Boys and B-Girls but never mustered the courage to try it yourself, this is the perfect place to start! Instructor Ricky will break down (get it??) foundational moves including top rocks, transition steps, footwork patterns and freezes. While the focus will be on learning technique, you’ll still get a bit of cardio in the process not to mention a serious strength workout. Absolutely no prior experience required. Update 5/7: Due to low registration, the remainder of this series was canceled. POUND will resume on Sundays at 10:30 and we’ll try breakdancing again some other time!

  • Sundays at 10:30 a.m. with Ricky
  • Fairmount, 2511 W. Girard St. 2nd Floor
  • Pre-registration required: $35 for the 3-week series (May 6, 13 & 20)
  • Medium/high impact | Beginner friendly

Beginner Pointe Intensive
Elevate your ballet skills to the next level as you learn to roll up and down en pointe with ease in this small-group workshop series. Designed specifically for dancers with background in ballet, but little to no prior pointe experience.

  • Thursdays at 8:15 p.m. with Beverly
  • Rittenhouse, 1624 South St.
  • Pre-registration required for the five-week series starting May 3. Please contact Beverly, our ballet director, to discuss enrollment.

Schedule Additions

Ballet Basics
Since our Monday section often fills up, we’re adding another option for absolute beginners to build up an understanding of classical ballet through a fun, straightforward approach. This 50-minute introductory class serves as a precursor to our Beginner Ballet I program. Like our longer ballet classes, you’ll be focusing on technique rather than fitness — though you might still get a bit of a lower body workout in the process! Absolutely no ballet experience required.

Note: This takes the place of a Dance Party Boot Camp class — unfortunately, we do not have an instructor available to continue that section at this time. Those seeking our highest intensity program can still find boot camp on the schedule throughout the week, including Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and now Thursdays in Midtown, plus a double dose on Sundays in Rittenhouse.

  • Wednesdays at 5 p.m. with Kayla
  • Rittenhouse, 1624 South St.
  • Low impact | Absolute beginner friendly | Wear socks or ballet slippers

By request, we’re bringing Bollywood over to our Fairmount outpost! BollyX mixes high-energy steps with high intensity interval training to create a nonstop, total body workout. After getting your heart rate up with a series of follow-the-leader routines, you’ll build a short choreography to “perform” as a kind of dance-battle finale. A mix of Bhangra and Hindi beats will help you keep your energy up until the end so you can burn calories and feel like a Bollywood star at the same time!

  • Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. with Deeksha and Teena alternating
  • Fairmount, 2511 W. Girard St. 2nd Floor
  • Medium/high impact | Beginner friendly

In addition to the new Bollywood and break dancing classes, we’re continuing to burn the floor in Fairmount every Sunday with Zumba and Hip-Hop Cardio, as well as on Wednesdays with Barre Fit. Check out this beautiful studio if you haven’t already! Also, later this month please be sure to keep an eye on our online schedule for a few reductions over Memorial Day weekend.

Mashup Mixtape
Get your booty shaking and your muscles quaking in this celebration of fun, creative fusions of popular music. You’ll recognize many of the songs in this workshop playlist, but we’ll bet you haven’t heard these mixes on the radio. Instructors Timaree and Lehla Olson are teaming up to lead this hour and a half of nonstop, high-energy cardio dance. Expect a blend of pop and hip-hop styles, a whole lot of sweating and a killer playlist.

  • Saturday, May 12 at 4 p.m. with Timaree & Lehla
  • South Philly, 1170 S. Broad Street
  • Pre-registration requested: $25; Members get 20% off!
  • High impact | Beginner friendly

Frisky Friday: Striptease Dance Parties
Build confidence and tone your entire body at these mini workshops featuring smokin’ hot dance routines, complimentary wine and refreshments! This month, we’re hitting the floor with a salacious tribute to Rihanna, then pulling out our favorite Beyonce moves for a sassy, bootylicious night you won’t forget! Recent Frisky Fridays sold out, so we highly recommend pre-registering to secure your spot.

  • May 4, 2018
    • Floor’d — Between hip grinds and doggie-style twerking, you’ll make the floor blush as you learn routines to Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” and “Work.” Bring knee pads or wear long pants if you have sensitive knees.
  • May 18, 2018
    • Beyonce Bombshells — We just can’t resist an all-Beyonce class every so often! After warming up to “Single Ladies,” “Beautiful Liar,” and several other Bey songs, you’ll piece together a super steamy floor combo to “Six Inch,” and maybe even cap off the night with a little “Dance For You” if time permits.
  • Both at 8:30 p.m. in Midtown (1301 Locust St, 2nd Floor)
  • $18 tickets include wine and refreshments; Members get 20% off!

Performance Series

We’ve got two awesome opportunities to take to the stage this summer. First up, “Take It Off: Burlesque Battle” at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. Timaree, Gabby and Deb will each be directing student routines that will headline this brand-new show, which will also include a few improv dance battles and special guest appearances. Rehearsals begin the week of May 21, click here for details and registration links.

Then, starting in June, several of our instructors will begin putting together routines for the Philadelphia Dance Day showcase on Saturday, July 28. Links to participate in tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet and pointe pieces will be posted next month. Meanwhile, please mark your calendars for this amazing nonprofit event and help us spread the word by passing along this Facebook invite. Last year, a record 600 people from around the city came together to celebrate Dance Day and we’re hoping to get even more dancers this summer!
