What do you get when you take traditional North Indian Bhangra, mix in some modern hip-hop moves, add some Bollywood flavor and turn on relentlessly high-octane music? One seriously fun, off-the-chain cardio workout.
Bollywood became known as a dance form from Bollywood movies, which often include huge musical numbers featuring a whole troupe of dancers. Thanks to major television shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars and America’s Got Talent, the genre has become more widely known in the United States, too.
Today’s Bollywood is heavily influenced by western culture, but at the heart of this style is Bhangra, a traditional folk dance that originated in the Punjab region of India, where it was typically danced to celebrate a successful harvest or a wedding. Typical Bhangra dancing involves “shrugging” of the shoulders, bouncing to the beat from the balls of the feet, slight shaking of the head and arms up in the air. It sounds like a lot of coordination, but we promise that anyone can learn these movements.
In our Bollywood Blast and BollyX classes, you’ll follow along to a series of cardio routines filled with lots of big movements and lots of sweating. BollyX mixes high-energy steps with high intensity interval training to create a nonstop, total body workout. After getting your heart rate up with a series of follow-the-leader routines, you’ll build a short choreography to “perform” as a kind of dance-battle finale. A mix of Bhangra and Hindi beats will help you keep your energy up until the end so you can burn calories and feel like a Bollywood star at the same time!
For students who want to take their Bollywood expertise to the next level, our small-group Bollywood Tech class may be the perfect fit. This 40-minute technique class builds progressive choreography that would fit in at a Bollywood performance. No prior Bollywood or Bhangra experience is required, however the pace of instruction is geared toward those with some background in learning sequences of movements. This class is capped at eight students to ensure individual attention, but you can guarantee your spot (and save off the drop-in price) by pre-registering for the series each month. Drop-ins are welcome if space allows.
Bollywood Fitness: BollyX & Bollywood Blast
- $12 drop in, one punch on a class card, or FREE for members
- Wear comfortable workout attire and athletic shoes or dance sneakers. (While bare feet are perfectly acceptable in our Bollywood Tech classes, we highly recommend supportive shoes for BollyX due to the impact of some of the movements)
- $10 per class for those who pre-register for the month; or drop-in for $12 if space allows (not included in class cards or memberships)
