Modern Dance Fitness

Release your creativity as you suspend, spiral and sweat!

We’re upping the pace on a traditional lyrical class to give you a liberating workout that draws on concepts from jazz, ballet and, of course, master modern dance technicians such as Graham and Horton.

Don’t worry if you’ve never heard those names before. While you’ll explore many of the techniques they influenced, the focus is on moving to the music rather than discussing philosophy or perfecting lines.

Class begins with a cardio warm up designed to improve alignment, range of motion and fluidity. Then, get the heart rate even higher as you practice patterns of steps to a variety of expressive songs from current artists like Adele and Florence and the Machine, to name just a few. The intensity of the class builds momentum as you follow that with fast-paced progressions across the floor. Depending on time, you may also learn a short combination. Finally, spend a few minutes conditioning and stretching before cooling down.

After a few weeks with instructor Angela Wertner, you’ll leave with a stronger core and longer, more flexible muscles. Wertner studied modern dance in college and has been teaching it, along with many other genres, at Philadelphia-area studios, camps and workshops over the past decade.

Like the majority of our programs, the goal is fitness and fun, and no prior dance experience is required. However, the movements can also be adapted to suit dancers of any level – just let Angela know if you want an extra push!

Modern Dance Fitness

  • When: Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 7:50 p.m.
  • Where: Major Moment, 1624 South St.
  • Cost: $12 drop in or one punch on a class card. FREE for members.
  • Wear: Comfortable workout attire like a tank top and sweats. Shoes are not necessary, though you may wish to wear socks, jazz shoes or dance sneakers to help with spins.
