We call it impact jazz because unlike a standard technique class, our focus is more on getting you sweating than making sure your form is perfect (though we can help with that too)! You’ll feel the impact on your entire body.
Class begins with a warm-up that includes exercises to develop strength, flexibility, isolation control and coordination, followed by breakdowns of moves that you’ll piece together in a non-stop cardio workout. By the end of the 50-minute class, you’ll have built a short choreographed routine.
Just as jazz draws inspiration from a multitude of musical styles including swing, blues, pop, soul and funk, our class will explore different “themes” every week, from musical theater to disco. You might even recognize influences of hip-hop, house, swing and Bolliwood.
While it’s not necessary to have dance experience for any of our classes, this one will also be suitable for more advanced dancers. The instructor will start with basic moves accessible to all dance levels, and then layer in optional leaps, pirouettes, chasay turns, and intricate footwork for those looking for more technical challenges. The class won’t specifically dedicate time to work on technical concepts such as spotting and center control, however, the instructor may offer tips at students’ request.
If you’ve never tried jazz, this is a great opportunity to see what it’s like in a no-pressure environment. The first class on Jan. 3, 2012 is only $5 drop-in. Plus, those who RSVP on Facebook will get a $5 gift certificate to come back and try it again, so it’s like getting a class for free!
Come dressed to sweat. If you don’t have dance sneakers or jazz shoes, regular sneakers will do just fine.
